EPL Team Profile - Liverpool

The formal name of the club is Liverpool Football Club, or Liverpool FC.

Known popularly by their nickname of the Reds, Liverpool's home venue is Anfield, with a capacity of just over 45,000. Founded in 1892, Liverpool have won the most league titles, 18 in all, a record that's jointly held with Manchester United, although none of those titles have come in the Premier League.

Liverpool have American owners in George Gilett and Tom Hicks; their chairman is Martin Broughton, and the manager, Roy Hodgson. Last season, the Reds finished at 7th place in the Premier League rankings.

In three matches played this year, the Anfield outfit have a win and a draw, apart from a 3-0 loss to Manchester City, one of Liverpool's rivals for a top four spot.

Pre-season Review:

The pre-season began for Liverpool in an atmosphere of intrigue. It all started with the departure of manager Rafa Benitez, from the squad. Thereafter, several stories played out as the headlines and rumours were kept alive.

Roy Hodgson took over as the Merseysider's new manager. One of Hodgson's early signings was Joe Cole on a free transfer. Steven Gerrard chose to stick on with the club. Fernando Torres belied rumours of his imminent departure. And the American owners put up the club for sale.

The Merseysiders comprise the following players: Reina, G Johnson, Agger, Carragher, Skrtel, Gerrard, Lucas, C Poulsen, Torres, Jovanovic, Kuyt, Jones, Kyrgiakos, Kelly, Maxi, Spearing, Pacheco, and Babel.

Rafa Benitez did not favour wingers. But having arrived from Chelsea, Joe Cole can give the Merseysiders the additional zing of flank attacks. Liverpool's atatcks have recently been uni-dimensional, in that they have through the middle of the park.

In an early summer signing, Charlton Athletic's Jojo Shelvey was welcomed to the squad. If he could make it to the starting eleven, 18 year old Shelvey would want to emulate his form in League One.

Standard Liege's Milan Jovanovic, an early signing who was spotted by Benitez, has arrived, and his inclusion in the Anfield squad means additional attack options. Glasgow Rangers' Danny Wilson is another promising sign up. Among departures, Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun are most significant.

There is no pressure of expectation on Roy Hodgson, after the poor showing by the Reds in the 2009-10 season, and the change at the helm can only do good for the team. And if Hodgson has been lucky in retaining Torres and Gerrard, he cannot hope to hang on to Javier Mascherano, and must work on getting a replacement, ASAP.

If they play to potential, Liverpool are capable of doing better than they did last season, but I cannot envisage the Merseysiders finishing any better than 5th.

Each time you place a contact lens on your eye, tears immediately begin to coat the lens. Human tears are necessary to keep the eye moist, clean, and clear. Tears contain lipids and more than 50 different proteins. These lipids and proteins immediately begin to fill the porous surface of the contact lens, the same pores that were originally designed to allow for the oxygenation of the cornea. When wearing the same lens over and over again what you will see happening is that the pores of the contact lens begin to clog up with natural tear components. Over time, this process will decrease and eventually severely limit the transmission of oxygen to the cornea. When looking at the lenses at the end of a day's wear, one can see that the lens is coated with debris and will require some physical rubbing to dislodge this debris. Once rinsed the debris will have been decreased on the surface but with little to no effect on the debris lodged in the pores.

When you compound the issues of lens cleanliness, and lens soiling with the ever important issue of oxygen deprivation you truly begin to comprehend the reasons for staying with a properly executed daily wear regimen. Any time the cornea is deprived of oxygen it sends out distress signals to the body for help. The body can do several things. One of these is to signal the blood vessels that exist at the periphery of the cornea to begin to move into the cornea as an emergency measure to supply oxygen. Since the cornea is always clear and without blood vessels, this condition could become a pathological one and, if allowed to develop, may bring blood vessels right into your field of vision.

So as you can see, keeping lenses clean and fresh is high on eye care practitioners' list of priorities. Limiting the re-use of your daily disposable lenses to a one-time use only as designed, provides both the professional and the contact lens wearer with a great measure of safety and ocular health, factors which were the basic objectives leading to the development of the daily wear lens. Encouraging successful fitting and the ongoing use of the wearer's contact lenses is the only way that the contact lens industry can continue to count on providing a valuable service to its clients.

Freezing Orders and Statutory Jurisdiction

The jurisdiction of the courts to grant freezing orders is to be found in s. 37(1) & (3) of the Supreme Court Act 1981. Section 37(1) states: "The High Court may by order (whether interlocutory or final) grant an injunction... in all cases in which it appears to the court to be just and convenient to do so."

Section 37(3) states:

In that case, the liquidator of two South African companies applied to the High Court in London without notice for a freezing order to be made against two individuals and a number of companies. The High Court granted the application for a freezing order but this was overturned by the Court of Appeal which held that the court had no jurisdiction to grant a freezing order in circumstances where the applicant had no intention of issuing proceedings immediately or almost immediately. The House of Lords upheld the Court of Appeal decision. In the absence of the commencement of substantive proceedings, or an undertaking to do so, the court has no jurisdiction (unless the exception provided by s. 25 CJJA applies).

Goals from Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos and Valencia's David Villa sealed the win. The tough French team turned against their own side with Thierry Henry booed and whistled at throughout following his controversial deliberate handball against the Republic of Ireland to seal qualification for the World Cup Finals. Coach Raymond Domenech wasn't spared either as once again he failed to spark a disjointed French team who were outplayed by the classy Spaniards throughout.
Germany vs Argentina

Argentina put their shaky World Cup qualifying campaign behind them with a strong performance against Germany in Munich, taking victory through a classy goal from Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain on the stroke of half-time. Argentina legend and coach Diego Maradona was in a confident mood after the match.

"This game had the character of a World Cup quarter-final and this is the level we were looking for," he said. "Maybe the press in Argentina won't like it, but we are going to play a very good World Cup in South Africa. What we showed is that we have a team who can become world champions for the first time after 24 years," Maradona said.

"But now I have got to reduce my squad from 30 players to 23. That is not going to be easy.

"We showed a lot of courage and the whole of Argentina was looking forward to this game. Germany has great potential and Argentina showed that they are on a par with them."

Who Should Liverpool FC Buy in the January Transfer Window?

Note that this article is about who we can realistically buy, not who I want us to buy in fantasy land. Liverpool Football Club have been strongly linked with Turkish whiz-kid Arda Turan recently, and I see this as an ideal move. Reportedly Arda (Turkish players are commonly known by their first name rather than their surname) would be available for around £10m, and we could easily raise that amount of cash with the sale of Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel and Andrea Dossena. The Turk often plays on the right wing but has been known to play in central midfield before, making him a highly versatile player (the kind that Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez likes).

The second player that could really benefit our team is veteran Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistlerooy, who, at his peak was one of the top marksmen in the world, but sadly now can't get a game for Real Madrid (his current club) due to their heavy squad redevelopment in the summer (where they spent over £200m on new players).

Another player that could be quite handy is Simon Kjaer. The Danish defender is one of Europe's hottest defensive talents, and the 20 year old who currently plays at Palermo would be a great addition to our squad and would certainly help to sure up our uncharacteristically leaky defence. Despite this, I think buying Kjaer might be a step too far for us, as we probably don't have the funds and our money would be better spent on quality attacking players.

Premiership Manager of the Year 2009

The football season is nearly over and already clubs are beginning to cement their final league positions. Chelsea and Arsenal will finish in 3rd and 4th place respectively, while Aston Villa and Everton will finish 5th or 6th accordingly. The Premiership title is still unsettled though, with Liverpool pushing Manchester Utd all the way. The battle for the final European spot is still wide open though, and any three from five clubs could be relegated. But now is the time where managers are judged, and only one can be the Premiership Manager of the Year.

Although it can be argued, the top 10 teams managers could be considered candidates for various reasons, for me, it is a choice between just two managers, both Scots, Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester Utd and David Moyes of Everton.

Both clubs are massive. Manchester Utd need little introduction, being a massive worldwide brand and the Premierships most successful club. Everton are one of the original twelve clubs that formed the first football league over 100 years ago and are the fourth most successful club in England. But both clubs have had varying fortunes over the past 20 years, with Utd becoming one of the richest in the world and Everton, thanks to poor management in the 90's, losing their tag of the "Mersey Millionaires".

So, the reasoning behind these two being the main candidates is easy. Manchester Utd have this season already won the World Club Competition and the League Cup. They are currently on the brink of retaining their Premier League title and are also in the Champions League final, again in an attempt to retain that title too. Sir Alex Ferguson has done a stirling job in bringing together his team, after a very indifferent start to the season, despite spending millions last summer. But he is now reaping the rewards.

In contrast, David Moyes has had next to nothing to spend. He did break Everton's transfer record with the signing of Maurone Fellaini for 15 million pounds on the last day of the transfer window, but due to the clubs finances, that fee will be paid in 3 million pound installments over the next 5 years. His squad is one of the smallest in the league, and he has had by far the biggest injury list, losing key players for large amounts of time over the season.

In spite of this, and a very poor start to the season which saw them win only once at home in the first 3 months, David Moyes has led his team to 6th place in the league, with an excellent chance of finishing 5th. He has also led Everton to their first FA Cup final in 14 years, after negotiating possibly the toughest route to the final in the history of the competition. Everton have had to beat four of the top five clubs in the Premiership in order to get to the final. And now they face Chelsea on 30th May. So things have not been easy for David Moyes, and it is because of this he must be considered as Manager of the Year. 

Both are great managers. Ferguson has proved himself time and time again, but he has had large financial backing to do this. Moyes is proving to be a great manager, but has yet to win anything. Both managers this season, have had their managerial abilities tested to the limit and it will be interesting to see who officially comes out as the winner.
