Soccer Field Measurements

Following soccer field measurements apply to adult matches. However all this rules may even apply to all ages. Learning soccer field measurements is not necessary to become a good soccer player, but it can be fun to know for example the maximum allowed width for a soccer field or. Let's start...

The soccer field measurements for international adult games are in the range of 110-120 yard and the width is in the range 70-80 yard. Fields for non-international matches may be 100-130 yard length and 50-101 yard in width, provided that the field does not become square. The longer boundary lines are called touchlines or sidelines, while the shorter boundaries on which the goals are placed are called goal lines.

A rectangular goal is positioned at the middle of each goal line. The inner edges of the vertical goal posts must be 8 yard apart and the lower edge of the horizontal crossbar supported by the goal posts must 8 ft above the ground. Nets are usually placed behind the goal, but are not required necessarily.

In the front of each goal is the penalty area or 18 yard box as some prefer to call it. This area is marked by the goal line, two lines starting on the goal line 18 yard from the goalposts and extending18 yard into the pitch perpendicular to the goal line and a line joining them. The 18 yard are has a number of important functions and the most important one is to mark where the goalie have permission to handle the ball with his/her hands.

Other important function is to mark where a penalty foul by a member of the defending team becomes punishable by a penalty kick. Other markings define the position of the ball or players at kickoffs, goal kicks, penalty kicks and corner kicks.
