FC Barcelona Player Profiles - Eric Abidal

Eric Abidal was signed in the summer of 2007 as a replacement for Gio. While he is a natural left back, Abidal can also play as a centre back when necessary with his combination of footballing skill, positioning and tactical awareness as well as his semi-legendary runs up the wing in support of the forwards.

Futbol Club Barcelona is Abidal's first team outside France and he arrived at the club after strong interest from Arsenal. Despite being pursued by Italian clubs also, he refused to move there because he feels the game in Italy is still too racist. His move to Barcelona is under a four year deal and on arrival in his new team was unable to assume is usual number 20 due to it already being worn by Deco and he wears 22 instead.

Chelsea FC

He moved from Olympique Lyon, who Barcelona have faced in the 2007-08 Champions League, with who he won the French league title on three occasions in a row (2004-5, 2005-6, 2006-7), as well as the French Cup of Champions twice (2004-5, 2005-6). As part of the deal to move to Barcelona, Lyon will gain half a million Euros if the Catalan team win the Champions League in the next four years. Previous clubs also include Lyon-La-Duchere, Monaco and Lille.

The player, who is of Martinique decent, was considered one of the best fullbacks in the country and played for the French national squad on more than 20 occasions, including being part of the team that were runners up in the 2006 World Cup.

Barcelona Football Club - The New Line Up For 2007-2008

Players in:

Thierry Henry, Arsenal (£16.1m)

Chelsea FootballClub

Yaya Toure, Monaco (£6.1m)

Eric Abidal, Lyon (£10m)

Gabi Milito, Real Zaragoza (£12.1m)

Players Out:

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Feyenoord (Free)

Maxi Lopez, FC Moscow (£1.3m)

Javier Saviola, Real Madrid (Free)

Ludovic Giuly, Roma (£2m)

Belletti, Chelsea (£3.7m)

Motta, Atletico Madrid (undisclosed)

The summer transfer window saw some interesting activity for Barcelona, including the signing of Thierry Henry from Arsenal after months of speculation. This addition to Barcelona's strike force should create a wealth of opportunities up front, although Henry has admitted to finding it difficult to get used to Barça's style of play, but his versatility should eventually work to the Catalan team's advantage.

Yaya Toure and Eric Abidal were also signed in the same week, arriving from Monaco and Lyon respectively and with Gio leaving for Feyenoord it seems that Abidal was brought in as a direct replacement. The club also signed Gabi Milito from Real Zaragoza to replace Motta who departed for Atletico Madrid.

Another player to depart was Maxi Lopez, who had been on loan to Mallorca during the last season. With Henry arriving on the scene the chances of first team appearances for Maxi didn't look good and so he made a move to FC Moscow. Saviola and Giuly were in a similar situation, the former moving to Real Madrid on a free transfer and the latter moving to Roma. Both players found themselves under utilised last season and the arrival of both new players and up and coming homegrown talent up front they seemed unlikely to do much this year.

Back in defence, Belletti finally moved to Chelsea after finding it hard to compete for a first team place with Zambrotta and Motta was put on the transfer list after apparently falling out with coach Frank Rijkaard. Eventually he was signed to Atletico Madrid on a one-year deal.

The summer also saw the emergence of two players from Barcelona's youth team who are beginning to mark on the first team. Giovani dos Santos is considered a wunderkind comparable with Ronaldinho, while Bojan Krkic, aged just 17, is hailed as one of the most exciting up and coming strikers in the game.

FC Barcelona Players - Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry, who was born in Les Ulis, France in August of 1977, is a star footballer for FC Barcelona as well as the French national team. All well-known sporting face, he has fronted ad campaigns for some of the biggest sportswear manufacturers on the planet. Not content to be merely a sports superstar he is also an ardent activist, raising awareness about children and poverty and combating racism in football and the world. Some of his most well known appearances have taken place during the Nike "'Stand Up, Speak Up" campaign.

Although he ended his long association with Nike after the 2006 World Cup, he has enjoyed success with Reebok for the "I am what I am" ad series. This megastar also is enjoying a stint as one of Gillette's featured athletes in the "'Champions Program". During the 2002 and the 2006 World Cup, Henry appeared in a number of television advertisements that promoted football as an activity that should be played for the benefit of young people as a member of the UNICEF-FIFA squad, a team made up of socially conscious professional footballers.

Chelsea FC

This six foot two inch striker is known by his nickname, 'Titi', but also by his number, 14. He has had this number since his early days with Arsenal and he was given the number when he made the move to FC Barcelona. He is well known for amazing speed, brilliant moves, and the ability to score decisive goals despite full or one-on-one coverage.

Henry began his football career at a young age in his hometown of Les Ulis. He was already playing for a local club by the age of seven, and went on to play for different youth clubs over the next decade. Among these groups were the US Palaiseau, ES Viry-Châtillon, and Clairefontaine. His father, Antoine Henry, was always his most ardent supporter who has encouraged this phenomenal player from the earliest days.

Henry was first signed by Arnold Catalano, an AS Monaco scout. While Monaco were already aware of this goal-scoring powerhouse, it was Thierry Henry's personality and all around abilities that really sold him. It also did not hurt when Henry scored all 6 goals in the 6-0 game that Catalano was watching. Thierry Henry was signed by AS at the age of 13 and made his first professional debut in 1994 when he was still only 17.

Henry then joined Juventus, before moving to Arsenal, where he gained his fame as striker and in 2007, he joined Spanish giant FC Barcelona Today he is one of football's most celebrated players at 31 years of age: and he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the European Golden Boot, PFA Players' Player of the Year, runner up for FIFA World Player of the Year, and he has been voted French Player of the year four times. Many coaches and players, as well as fans, consider him to be one of the greatest living football players in the world, and even after his departure for FC Barcelona; the Arsenal fans still voted him their best player ever.

Heroes of FC Barcelona - Johan Cruyff

Fans of FC Barcelona remember Johan Cruyff fondly for both his time as a player for the club in the 1970s and then as the longest serving and most successful manager in the club's history.

Cruyff's footballing career began with Dutch club Ajax, who he had joined on his tenth birthday, debuting for the first team aged 17 in 1964 and the following season his 25 goals helped Ajax to win the league.

Chelsea FC

The 1966-67 season was even better for Johan Cruyff; not only did Ajax win the league again, but Cruyff ending the season as the leading goal scorer in the Dutch league. With a total of 33 goals to his credit he was named Dutch footballer of the year, an award he received for the two following seasons.

Cruyff's move to Barcelona came in 1973 and he quickly won favour with the Catalan supporters by saying that Real Madrid had never been an due to its association with Franco. His second season at FC Barcelona saw them win the league for first time since 1960 and humiliating Real Madrid in a 5-0 win at Santiago Bernabeu. While at Barcelona he was awarded the prestigious European Player of the Year twice in a row.

In 1979, aged 32, Johan Cruyff moved to America, where he first played for the Los Angeles Aztecs for just one season followed by Washington Diplomats. At the beginning of the 1981 season he returned to Spain, where he played for Levante, quickly followed by a move back to Ajax. However in 1983 Ajax failed to renew his contract and signing for Feyenoord, Ajax's arch-rival, he helped win the Dutch league.

Johan Cruyff also had a successful international career, appearing for Holland 48 times and scoring 33 goals, refusing to participate in the 1986 World Cup in Argentina because of the alleged used of torture and murder practised by the Junta then in power.

Retiring as a player, he Cruyff's career as a manager started with Ajax, but it was at Barcelona, which he rejoined in 1988, that was the highlight of his management career.

With 11 titles won between1988 and 1997, his time as manager is considered to be one of the golden eras for the club and the side he assembled, commonly referred to as "The Dream Team", won the Spanish league title for four successive years between 1991 and 1994.

The History of Barcelona V Real Madrid

Football is full of professional rivalries - Liverpool Vs Everton, Manchester United Vs Man. City, Arsenal Vs Tottenham, however none of them are arguably as explosive as games between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Whenever the two teams meet, the match even has its own name - El Clasico - and is billed as one of the most exciting matches to watch in the world.

Like many professional rivalries in sport, the Barcelona/Real Madrid animosity stems from a general competition between the two cities. During the Civil War, Madrid was an ally of General Franco, where as Barcelona was more tied to its Catalan roots and resented Franco's attempted control. They had their reasons - Franco was determined to unify the country and therefore quash Barcelona's traditions and independence, including trying to wipe out its local language - Castilian Spanish.

Chelsea FC

During the Civil War, Barcelona was even told to deliberately lose a game against Madrid on Franco's orders. They took this to the extreme and lost 11-1. Officials were so incensed, that the Barcelona team was fined and suspended. This started the beginning of the rivalry and saw Real Madrid seize the lead, wining five European Cup titles.

Real Madrid became the most respected and well known team on the planet until 1961 when Barcelona fought back with a vengeance, knocking Madrid out of the European Cup tournament. This took the rivalry to a whole new level.

Barcelona also refuse certain commercial aspects that other teams utilise, such as sponsorship and other 'money-grabbing' schemes. The fact that Real Madrid do so, is also seen as sticking it to the opposition, who Barcelona see as selling out, as opposed to them being a 'sporting club' in it for the glory.

Today, when players move between the teams, the newspapers make an event of it. In 2000, Luis Figo moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid for a record transfer fee, but as a result incurred the wrath of fans who let their displeasure be known by throwing rubbish (and even a pig's head at him) during matches.

While the rivalry is a symbiotic relationship, with both teams needing each other to make the headlines and drawing the crowds, the rivalry is as strong as even. Both teams are members of the G14 group - a collective of the 14 most powerful football teams on the planet, and whenever the two teams meet for a match, it is always a sell out event with millions of others tuning in to watch the clash.

Barcelona FC - the Most Famous Football Team on the Planet?

With its avid fan base - known as the culés - and a motto that declares, "El Barca es mes que un club," the Barcelona FC would appear to have a lot to live up to when it comes to its reputation. It is safe to say, though, that Barca - as it is typically referred to by football fans - is the most successful football team on the planet today. With a rich history spanning back to the year 1899, and strings of successes that leave many other clubs in the dust, Barcelona FC offers football adherents a roster of the top stars in the game, consistent excellence and a level of excitement that is unmatched by virtually any other major sports team in the world.

A Tradition Of Excellence

Chelsea FC

The Barcelona football club was founded in the year 1899 by Joan Gamper and a group of Spanish, Swiss and English men. Almost immediately, the Barcelona FC emerged as one of the top football clubs in Spain; it was off to a marvelous start, to say the least. Despite this early success, though, the club nearly folded early on; Gamper took over as president in 1908 and helped steer the club back towards success. Under his leadership, Barcelona FC secured its first stadium and started accumulating a number of impressive victories.

Surviving Through Thick And Thin

The twentieth century was a tumultuous one, and between many key victories the Barcelona FC had to grapple with the Spanish Civil War as well as two World Wars. Despite it all, though, Barcelona FC came out on the other side with a truly phenomenal team. With the signing up of Dutch phenom Johan Cruyff in 1973, Barcelona FC rocketed to unprecedented heights. Since that time, the club has essentially been unstoppable. Star players - including Maradona, Lineker, Figo, Stoitchkov and Rivaldo - have all done their part to create some of the most passionate fans in the world of football.

Strong Evidence Of Success

Beyond their many electrifying victories and long lines of top rates players, Barcelona FC has enjoyed more accolades than seemingly any other football club in the world. Hotels in Barcelona book up quick when the team plays at the 98,000-person capacity Camp Nou. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics named the club the most consistently successful one since statistics have been kept. It's little wonder that Barcelona hotels fill up when the team plays, considering its first place UEFA ranking and many other key achievements.

Immerse Yourself In Barcelona FC Pride Firsthand

Ardent fans of the Barcelona FC - and there are millions of them - can revel in the club's glory by visiting Club Nou and touring the premises. By booking hotels in Barcelona, visitors can head over to Europe's largest stadium and enjoy one of two different self-guided tours. There is also a fascinating museum on the premises, where fans can observe the club's many trophies up close and personal. If you want to see all of this for yourself, book Barcelona hotels and plan a trip to the home of football's most successful team.

Chelsea Will Beat Barcelona - Champions League Semi Final 2009

The much awaited tussle between Chelsea and Barcelona football clubs is here and the first leg of the two leg semifinal will commence in the evening in Barcelona. It is deemed as the match up of the season with teams with different abilities trying to out do each other. In many ways it will be a contest between the fast paced physical approach of English premier league and technically superior one touch football of Barcelona.

The prediction is hard to make and even both coaches are staying away from making any sort of announcements before the match.

Chelsea FC

I guess I need to put my head on block and I'm going with Chelsea Football Club. I believe the Barcelona is about to catch a slap. They will be beaten over both legs.

Chelsea unlike Bayern Munich in the previous round have a much stable and permanent defense and it will be mighty hard for the Barcelona's forward to run them home and dry by beating the off side trap. Henry, Eto and Messi are good in La Liga this season but they haven't come across the physical approach of Chelsea. Bayern had three new defenders in last four and probably playing for the first time together at Nou Camp.

Secondly most of Barcelona creativity is focused on Xavi and Inniesta, and the duo will face a stiff challenge from Essien and Ballack, both physically demanding players especially upper body strength which the Barcelona players lack.

The dual of the match could be either Essien and Xavi or Malouda vs Dani Alves. It may seem strange but most of Messi industriousness depends upon Alves as it provides Messi to go in on his left foot. Malouda drives will not only keep Alves in his own half but his better adaptability to defensive work will also make it easy for Boswinga to defend against Messi. Henry and Eto are free running players and they won't get any space today so won't be a big surprise if one of them get substituted around 75 minutes.

Leave all the rest to Drogba has Barcelona don't have something called defense in football and with fast paced closing they will bound to make errors. Barcelona is not getting anything out of its home match.

Leave the rest for next week.

Futbol Club Barcelona

With supporters of FC Barcelona located all around the world and a massive global following, it will come as no surprise to most people that one priority for many visitors to Barcelona is to see the team in action at the Nou Camp.

Interest has become especially keen over the last few years when players like Ronaldinho, Messi and Eto'o have displayed the kind of on-pitch magic that makes the final result almost irrelevant. Luckily for supporters and the team though, this spectacular football goes beyond just show and the team is able to score too.

Chelsea Football Club

The result of this is that Barcelona have won the Spanish La Liga for the last 2 seasons and took home the Champions League trophy in 2006 and the result means that Futbol Club Barcelona is a bigger draw than ever.

Futbol Club Barcelona

The club's most eagerly awaited matches are against Real Madrid, the archrival of Barcelona. The matches are always hard fought, with the honour of each club at stake and the matches are always sold out quickly. Other more recent rivals include Chelsea after a number of clashes over the last few years in Champions League, and after the Champions League defeat of Arsena, that club can surely be added to the list of arch rivals.

With tickets going on sale to the public just 2 weeks before a match and 130,000 club members vying for 98,000 tickets it often makes sense to book from one of the ticket agents with a guaranteed allocation for each match.

Sneaking Inside Barcelona Soccer Club

Barcelona is well known all over the world not only as a progressive city but it is known also known worldwide for soccer. The city is home to one of the most dynamic and most celebrated soccer club, the FC Barcelona soccer club.

FC Barcelona soccer club is no doubt the best soccer club in the whole of Spain, under which is the team Barca, the soccer team that holds the record for most wins. Barca is the sole team in Europe that has been able to compete in the most coveted soccer tournament in Europe, the European Cup. It has also set its own record for most wins on Spain's Copa del Rey. The club's official colors were royal blue, gold and maroon.

The team's reputation in Barcelona can be seen on the lives of fans everyday. Soccer fanatics wear Barca's jerseys and accessories almost everyday or on game day to show their salute to the team. Not only this, they even had their mobile phones installed with Barca hymn ringtones and had it connected to the team's official site to update them of the team's standing if they were unable to watch the game live.

Another asset that Barcelona possessed is the fact that they had the biggest football museum worldwide and it is also the most frequented football museum.

A soccer club as successful as FC Barcelona has all the pride for the world to hear and admire. Needless to say, it sure is the first club in the head of every soccer player to join with if they will only be given a chance.

Barcelona Defense Will Crack at Chelsea

Most of the Barcelona football club fans were critical that Chelsea parked the defensive bus in front of their goal and cynically keep defending for the ninety minutes. Well for all the Barcelona's football club fans here is an invitation - Please parks the bus at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea will score.

Any body for the taking, well the shoe is now on the other foot and believe you me Barcelona will be found wanting in the second leg. They can't break a five men defense unlike nine men defense at Nou Camp and will concede goals from outside the box from where they even failed to mount a decent shot at Peter Cech goal in full ninethy minutes in the first leg of Champions League Semi final 2009.

The defensive frailties of Barcelona will be all there for display at the Stamford bridge when the attacking full backs of the Barcelona will be confined to their half with Chelsea's wide attacking players and the weakened central defense due to absence of Marquez and Puyol will be shaky against the power and speed of Drogba.

Parking a bus is not easy thing in football that too for a full ninety minutes at a pitch which seems like twice the size of Stamford Bridge and with players touted as the best three in the world at the moment. For Chelsea the hard part of keeping a clean sheet at Nou Camp is already achieved and now it is the quest to score two goals in the first twenty five minutes at Stamford Bridge and defend aggressively using the upper body strength.

Two players who need to be cautious in the coming match is Ballack and Ivanovich, Ballack for the yellow card and Ivanovich for tacking the speed of Henry on left flank as I won't be surprised if Boswinga again neutralize Messi in his own game of coming inside and taking the ball on his left foot.

FC Barcelona - The Rijkaard Years

Frank Rijkaard is a world-renowned football player and coach known for his no-nonsense, aggressive style of play. His tenure as manager of FC Barcelona (familiarly known by its fans simply as Barça) was marked by successes and controversy.

The period in which Rijkaard was brought into FC Barcelona was one of turmoil for the club. The past few years had been very disappointing, accentuated by players and managers coming and going, including the betrayal of vice-captain Luis Figo, who left the team to join their rivals Real Madrid. Newly elected FC Barcelona's new president Joan Laporta desperately wanted to turn things around for the team and began by bringing in Dutchman Rijkaard as manager in 2003. Rijkaard's appointment came as a surprise to FC Barcelona's fans due to his inexperience and tarnished reputation.

Rijkaard had made a name for himself as a player for AC Milan years earlier. Although he had played for other teams before and after, it was during his tenure as a player for AC Milan that he was most known. Rijkaard was known for his aggressive style and hot-headed temperament, which brought him many victories and controversy, respectively.

By the time he sat in Barça's manager's chair, however, he had his temper under control. He had already done two years at the Netherlands national football team, leading them to the Euro 2000 semi-finals, and two years managing Sparta Rotterdam, where he did not fare so well. This so-so performance seemed to light a fire under the young manager, as he came into FC Barcelona with a new purpose. Rijkaard was now known simply as a no-nonsense manager with little flash. He let his and his players' actions speak for themselves on and off the field. They were just out to win the match in the most impressive manner possible.

Though he got off to a slow start (losing to arch rivals Real Madrid in December 2003), Rijkaard soon turned the team around. FC Barcelona finished the 03-04 season as La Liga runners-up before Rijkaard brought in new players to round out the team. The addition of the new roster allowed the club to go to win La Liga for two consecutive years in 04-05 and 05-06.

Rijkaard was the first Barca coach to ever win twice at Santiago Barnebeu, their rival's stomping grounds. He was also nominated for UEFA's Team of the Year in 2005 and honored in 2006 for his contributions to the European Cup. He also managed the team to a victory in the 2005-06 Champions League, which made him only the fifth person ever to win the European Cup both as a manager and a player.

After these victories, however, came a drought. The following two years were not so great for the team, culminating in a loss to Manchester United in the Semi-Final of the '07-'08 UEFA Champions League. There was much speculation after this about Rijkaard leaving the club, due to them not winning a trophy for two years. Finally, on May 8, 2008, it was announced that Frank Rijkaard would be leaving the team at the end of the season.

Rijkaard has now been replaced with Barca B coach Josep Guardiola. Many players have left the team and have been replaced with good prospects. What this means for the future of the team has yet to be seen. With the fickle nature of football club presidents and fans, it remains to be seen how Guardiola will measure up to his predecessors.

History & Progress of FC Barcelona Football Club

You can visit the fantastic city of Barcelona, if you want to have wonderful football vacation in Europe. The fabulous capital of Catalonia certainly is one of the top venues to enjoy football in Europe. Located on the mouths of Llobregat & Besòs Rivers on the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona surely is a perfect destination for football.

Football is the first passion for the Catalan People. Probably that was the reason that FIFA chose Barcelona as venue for several matches of the 1982 Football World Cup. The magnificent city is widely known for FC Barcelona or Futbol Club Barcelona, which is one of the major sports clubs of Europe.

The Club is best known for its Football team, but the club also has teams for rugby, wheelchair basketball, ice hockey, athletics, baseball, cycling, field hockey, figure skating, and volleyball. Some of the Club's other known teams include FC Barcelona B (Football), FC Barcelona Women's Football, FCB Rugby, FC Barcelona-Institut Guttman, AXA FC Barcelona (Basketball), FC Barcelona Handball, FC Barcelona Futsal, and FC Barcelona Sorli Discau (Rink Hockey).

Founded by Joan Gamper with the support of a group of Swiss, English, and Catalan men in 1899, the Club is popularly known as Barca. The club has progressed brilliantly to virtually become the major sports institution of Catalonia. The Club's motto is "Més que un club," that literally means 'More than a club'.

In 1928, the Club teamed up with Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao to set up La Liga, and it became the first La Liga champion. FC Barcelona Fixtures 2008-2009

With the fixture list for the Spanish league now published we are now in a position to start planning which matches to go and see. One of the top two clubs in Spain is normally considered to be FC Barcelona, and here we discuss the highlights of the fixture list for the year.

The top matches are undoubtedly the games between Barcelona and Real Madrid due to the huge rivalry between the two cities and the rejection of a centralised Spain by many Catalans. The two clubs are life long archrivals and the matches eagerly awaited. The first round clash takes place in Barcelona on December 13th or 14th, with the return match at the Santiago Bernadeu stadium in Madrid taking place on May 2nd/3rd.

One of the other great clashes is against Barcelona's second team, RCD Espanyol. This season the first leg is played at the Estadi Olimpic on the last weekend of September, with Espanyol crossing town for the Nou Camp on February 21st/22nd. While Espanyol aren't at the same level as Barcelona, they do have a hardcore fan base and the results are not a forgone conclusion by any means.

Other top matches include Barcelona versus Getafe, a hard fighting team from Madrid. Although they only gained promotion to the top division several years ago, they quickly established a reputation as a worthy rival under the management of Bernd Schuster who is now at Real Madrid. They visit the Nou Camp on November 22nd/23rd, with Barça making the return match on April 18th/19th and other matches of note include Valencia and Sevilla, both worthy opponents.

Barcelona - A Rich Football Club With Good Intentions

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia - an autonomous community of Spain. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, it is the second largest Spanish city with a population of around 1.6million people. Barcelona is perhaps best known for its sporting links - in 1992 it held the Olympic Games and its main football side, FC Barcelona, is one of the biggest in the world.

Barcelona is one of only a dozen teams to have won the Champions League on more than one occasion - most recently in 2006 when they remained unbeaten throughout the entire tournament, a feat only matched by Manchester United in 2008. Their two victories are, however, overshadowed by rival Real Madrid's record of nine cup wins.

Their Spanish rivals also have the upper hand in Spanish Premier League La Liga titles - winning by 31 to 18 - but Barcelona have won the Spanish cup 24 times, which is more than any other side in the country.

Football is often criticised for the amount of money involved. Whether it's how much the club spends on transfer fees and player wages or the cost of tickets and merchandise to cover these outgoings, the general consensus is that it's too much.

During the 2006/07 season, Barcelona was listed as the third-richest club in world football but the club has dented the claim that all clubs are money-grabbing. Rather than have a company pay money to be their shirt sponsor - an easy way to generate income for the club and one that is undertaken by almost all professional sides these days - Barcelona announced in 2006 that the logo of children's charity UNICEF would appear on their strips. They agreed a five-year deal which would see the football club donate a small percentage of its income to a foundation set up in partnership with the charity.

This trend has now begun to spread to other clubs. Aston Villa announced that they would advertise Acorns Children's Hospice for the 2008/09 season - it is the first time a Premiership club has used a sponsor in this way.

Both clubs have received a lot of positive press following their decisions and many hope that others will follow in their footsteps and help those in society who most need it.

Despite the loss in revenue, both teams still have enough income to make big money signings to stay competitive in their respective leagues. Indeed, Barcelona remains one of the biggest clubs in the world and is constantly looking to challenge for the La Liga title and Champions League honours.

Recent stats show around 25% of Spain's population support the Catalan giants and millions more follow them around the world, often flying to the city and staying in hotels in Barcelona just to watch them play. It's a huge boost to local tourism and the more money that is spent on the club, the more that they donate to charity.

Arsenal Meets Barcelona Live in UEFA Champions League

There will be an atmosphere of anticipation at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal meets Barcelona in one of the biggest UEFA Champions League matchups in years. Once the draw revealed the matchup, the excitement from both sets of fans has been steadily increasing. This is hardly surprising considering the way both teams play football which has often been pointed out by fans to be the personification of perfection in the sport.

The stable of stars that adorn Barcelona and Arsenal's lineups are also the stuff of fantasy football. Barcelona boast perhaps the best player on the planet currently in the form of Lionel Messi, the Argentine who has scored countless beautiful goals and made many more. The Swedish enigma Zlatan Ibrahimovic partners him in attack and is capable of moments of magic that belies his physical stature. The Catalan club's midfield is dictated by the synchronous symphonic play from the Spanish duo of Iniesta and Xavi who form the perfect axis. Barcelona's defence might be their weakest area but Gerard Pique and Carlos Puyol man the fortress well enough on most occasions.

The Gunners from North London do not pale in comparison. Leading the line would usually be Robin Van Persie but the injured Dutchman's place will go to the equally capable Daniel Bendtner. Working in tandem with him will be the marvelous Andrei Arshavin and Theo Walcott who both ally pace with inventive genius. Pulling the strings in midfield is the much sought after Cesc Fabregas who would be eager to face his former club. Arsenal are also suspect at the back although Sol Campbell will be enjoying his indian summer with the club he rejoined in the transfer window.

Some of these players might be missing from the first leg in England due to injuries. Barcelona will miss the services of Iniesta who has to sit out due to a hamstring strain. His place would surely go to Thierry Henry who will make an emotional return to the club where he spent 8 years of his career at Arsenal.

Arsenal have received the biggest blow to their Champions League hopes with news that playmaker Fabregas would most likely have to miss the first leg. A knee injury suffered in the club's latest match has landed him on the treatment table. Last minute medical treatment could yet see him line up against Barcelona and Fabregas would be keen to pit his talents against the club that many expect him to return to in the near future.

The 2006 Champions League final was the most recent time when the Gunners had to play Barcelona. Spanish flair came out on top on the night as Henry experienced the biggest disappointment of his career with Arsenal. It was not long after that the Frenchman departed for Barcelona as once again, football's ability in perfectly timed dramatic irony was once again illustrated.

The expectations and excitement surrounding the Arsenal vs Barcelona live stream could end in disappointment if both teams suffer an attack of nerves. There is a lot riding on each game as the Champions League approaches its conclusion. The knockout format is well and truly underway and no second chances will be available for each team. This could lead to players adopting a safety-first approach that could resemble shadowboxing, instead of going at each other's throats in search of the knockout punch.

A Profile Of Joan Laporta, President Of FC Barcelona

Probably the first time many people heard of Joan Laporta was during the campaigning that preceded FC Barcelona's presidential elections in 2003. Joan Gaspart had just stepped down from the position he had filled since 2000, with morale at the club at a low after a series of disastrous seasons coinciding with falling attendances and mounting debts.

Laporta's election promise was simple; if he were voted president he would sign David Beckham, a move that immediately raised his profile both in Barcelona and in the UK, won him tremendous support, and helped catapult him past Lluis Bassat, the presidential favourite.

Elected in June 2003 he soon found that he was unable to keep his promise and David Beckham went to Real Madrid instead - fortunate as it turned out as he failed to live up to his reputation at all.

However, despite his initial setback Laporta's deputy, Sandro Rossell, was able to sign a Brazilian player instead, Ronaldo de Assis Moreira - better known throughout the world as Ronaldinho. Also requiring a new team manager, Laporta's team raised a few eyebrows with the appointment of Frank Rijkaard to the role, due to his relative inexperience and vowed to fight football violence, something his predecessor had overlooked.

With low player morale, the start of the season saw virtually no change in performance and Barcelona fans were calling for changes - many people thought that Rijkaard should go, in favour of someone with the experience to turn the team around.

Barcelona's relative lack of success continued until half way though the season, and suddenly things started to gel. Edgar Davids was loaned from Juventus for the remainder of the 2003-2004 season and although he worked well with Ronaldinho and was popular with fans he was unable to agree terms to remain with the club. After that shaky start, Laporta's first year of reign saw the club achieve what many of their fans thought impossible; they came second in the league to Valencia and earned a place in Champions League for the following year.

With Davids gone the search was on to reinforce the front of the team, as well as sweep out some of the players associated with the old guard. The rash of signings included Cameroon player Samuel Eto'o, as well as Deco and Giuly. All was not going well inside the club though, with Laporta and Rossell in frequent dispute and Rossell reportedly wanting to change Rijkaard despite the season's result, and accusing the management team of being influenced by former Barça player Johan Cruyff.

Barcelona made a good start to the 2004-2005 season and playing consistently and honing Rijkaard's strategy of dominating the opposing team in its own area, Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-0 at Santiago Bernabeu in the November, earning a round of applause from the home supporters. The strong performance lasted the entire season and saw Barcelona finish at the top of the league, although Chelsea knocked them out of Champions League.

This didn't stop Sandro Rossell and four other directors of FC Barcelona from waging war inside the club in a curiously ill-timed rebellion. Eventually Joan Laporta asked for public clarification of where these dissident directors stood; the five resigned in June 2005.

Barcelona's following season was even more successful, with both the domestic and Champions League titles; this time it was Barcelona who knocked Chelsea out of Champions League and went on to win the title against Arsenal. However there was more trouble over the term of Laporta's presidency, with a court decision that the elections should have been called in June.

In the end the election didn't take place - although set for September there was no candidate with enough backing to oppose him and so Joan Laporta remains president to this day.

Who Should FC Barcelona Play in Their Left Midfield Slot

FC Barcelona will be going into a tough schedule when the players return from their respective national teams and the toughest decision for Guardiola in the upcoming matches will be who to play in midfield together with Yaya and Xavi, and in the attack next to Messi and Eto'o. Who to play in these positions gives the coaching staff great possibilities with which to vary the play. In the tuff games I expect the rest of the lineup to be:

Valdes Alves - Puyol - Marquez - Abidal Yaya Xavi - ? Messi - Eto'o - ?

Option 1: Iniesta in midfield, Henry in attack.

Strengths: The obvious strengths for this constellation are the attacking possibilities that it brings to the team. Iniesta has an incredible vision which allows him to create space with his touch and acceleration that can leave a man standing on his heels. We've seen the enormous influence Iniesta has on the teams attacking flow in recent games against Malaga and Lyon. Barca scored a combined 11 goals in those two games - games that were played against number 6 in Spain and number 1 in France.

Henrys role in this system is in a stabilized attack situation to create width on the team allowing the midfielders to keep possession and pass the ball from side to side until an opportunity to break through presents itself. Furthermore, he cuts in from the left when the balls on the right. This produced the first goal against Lyon and the third against Malaga. Henry is amazing at beating the offside trap and that is something that must be utilized with this lineup.

Weaknesses: As good as this lineup is offensively it has its weaknesses in defense. Although Iniesta is good defensively in open play, which was proven as he was often used as the holding midfielder under Rijkaard, he is very limited in the air. Furthermore, if the team has its foundation rocked it takes time to regain the grip of the game due to the team needing possession. In the two above mentioned games we saw Lyon score once from a set piece, and Malaga had several good chances from set pieces.

This will get better when Abidal replaces Sylvinho in the left back, but the set pieces will still be Barcas weak point. In the game against Lyon, they shook Barca with their second goal, where Iniesta lost a physical struggle and it took time to regain the momentum. Adding a strong midfielder would diminish that problem, which leads us to the second option:

Option 2: Keita in midfield, Henry in attack.

Strengths: Keita is a very different player from Iniesta. He has great strength and is very good in the air. Adding Keita in leaving Iniesta on the bench brings a lot more stability on defensive set pieces and increases Barcas options from attacking set pieces. We saw his defensive work against a strong right side in the away game against Seville. Adding Keita would allow us to have 3 big, strong headers on offensive set pieces in Puyol, Marquez and Keita that will keep defenders busy allowing others to stand free.

This was the case in the El Classico where the Real defence completely forgot about Eto'o leaving him unmarked after Puyols header. Furthermore, Keita has a knack of scoring important goals coming from behind. He equalized against Getafe in the 1-1 draw at Nou Camp and scored the deciding goal away against Villarreal. Henrys role would be the same as in option 1. However, he would be needed to create more play as neither Abidal nor Keita are players that can dribble past a man.

Weaknesses: Adding Keita instead of Iniesta definitely hinders the attacking flow of the team. In my opinion it is no coincidence that Barcas down period coincided with Iniestas injury. Keita doesn't have the same flow in his game as Iniesta and leaving him on the bench leaves a big gaping creativity hole on the left side of the team. Henry is better utilized when he gets the ball at speed instead of getting it in his feet and then having to dribble past an opponent. This can lead to all the offensive production to come from the right.

Furthermore, although it is better defensively it might not be enough. This leads us to the third option in midfield:

Option 3: Keita in midfield, Iniesta in attack.

Strengths: This is a very strong defensive formation and Iniesta and his world of creativity is still on the pitch. It was used in the away game against Almeria in which they didn't create a chance, or as the Spanish statisticians calls it: "Occasiones de gol". And it wasn't just because Almeria is a bad team that can't create chances. The weekend after playing Barca they dominated at Real Madrid and were very unlucky to be behind at half-time.

This formation also keeps Iniesta in the mix allowing him to dribble in from the right. Unlike Henry, Iniesta is a player that is best when he gets the ball in his feet, challenge a man and most of the times dribble past him. Iniesta is also more defense minded than Henry and provides better cover when Keita makes deep runs into the box. We saw these runs against Almeria where only a fantastic save by the keeper, hindered Keita from scoring in that game. Furthermore, Iniesta is better at keeping possession than Henry, and as long as we have the ball the opponent can't score.

Weaknesses: Iniesta is not a born goalscorer. Henry has a habit of scoring very important goals, which was underlined in the games against Lyon where he scored 3 of Barcas 6 goal. These goals were the important away goal and the two first at the Camp Nou to break the deadlock. Iniesta has only scored 2 goals in 31 games this season. This formation will simply create fewer goals than option 1, but not necessarily less than option 2.

So there are strengths and weaknesses in all 3 formations. This means that it must be the circumstances that determine which formation to use. Here is how I see them utilized.

First leg against Bayern at home: We need to score and secure a good result against them so we can rely on that in the return leg. Thus, I suggest using option 1, Iniesta in midfield and Henry in the attack. This formation has the possibility and potential to secure a big win not allowing Bayern many chances of a comeback in the second leg.

Second leg against Bayern: Depending on the first game it is circumstantial which formation to use. If we win big, we will probably field some of the fringe players like Busquets, Gudjohnsen or Bojan. If we have the expected 1-2 goal lead from the first game I favor using option 3 to allow us to keep possession of the ball and have a strong defensive presence - especially on their set pieces, where they are strong. If we are behind going into the second leg I strongly favor option 1.

El Classico: We will most likely still be leading Real Madrid by at least 3 points at this time of the tournament. Furthermore, their right side is very strong offensively with Ramos and Robben. This favors option 2 or 3 with Keita playing deep in the left slot of the midfield, like he did at Seville. In that game Henry occupied the attacking slot (Iniesta was injured).

In the rest of the games in the Mount Everest schedule I will expect option 1 to be chosen at home against Seville and Villarreal and option 2 to be chosen away at Valencia, due to Henry always playing well against Valencia.

A very possible Champions League semifinal against either Liverpool or Chelsea is similar to the one against Bayern. We play the first leg at home so that favors option 1. The return leg formation will be decided by the same formula as for the return leg against Bayern.

Furthermore, rotations will probably give Busquets and Gudjohnsen starting places in midfield due to the extremely tight schedules, but I suspect the concept of the formations with these two players will be close to option 1, 2 or 3. Busquets could also give rest to Yaya, e.g. at home against Seville.

Champions League Draw - Chelsea Draw Barcelona For the Third Season Running

For the third season in succession Chelsea found themselves pitched against the current European champions, Barcelona in group A. Werder Bremen and Levski Sofia make up the quartet and it would be a huge surprise if either of those teams progressed.

In group B Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Sporting Lisbon and Spartak Moscow will do battle. Bayern have been weakened by the loss of Ballack to Chelsea, but should still be good enough to get through. Inter Milan have strengthened at the expense of their scandal hit rivals in Italy and will be hard to beat.

Group C sees Liverpool, winners in 2005, returning to the scene of their Istanbul triumph to play Galatasaray. Turkish football seems to have gone off the boil and Gala might struggle against both PSV Eindhoven and Bordeaux.

Group D pitches Valencia, Roma, Olympiakos and the dangerous Shaktar Donetsk, and the first two should make the last sixteen.

Group E sees the most successful European team ever, Real Madrid against Lyon, Steau Bucharest and Dynamo Kiev. Real begin the campaign under the returning Fabio Capello and they should improve on last season's dismal performance. Lyon under Gerard Houllier are still improving and should qualify.

Group F coughs up an Anglo-Scottish clash. Manchester United sent a reserve team up to Glasgow just before the season started and duly thumped the Scottish champions 3-0. Not many give Celtic much chance against United's first XI who have started the season on fire. Benfica look dangerous again. They knocked both United and Liverpool out last term and will need to be respected. FC Copenhagen makes up the quartet and may surprise a few people.

Group G features Arsenal, last year's beaten finalists, and they take on Porto, CSKA Moscow and Hamburg, not an easy group on paper for any of them and Arsenal will have to improve on early poor results at their brand new stadium. But expect them to qualify. No London team has ever won the European Cup/Champions League and Arsenal are desperate to beat their rivals Chelsea and Spurs (they're in the UEFA cup this time) to that particular honour. But Arsenal have lost several notable players such as Pires, Campbell and Bergkamp and though they have young rapidly improving players like Van Persie and Walcott, it is hard to envisage them picking up the trophy this time round.

Group H sees the banned, but reinstated AC Milan host surprise qualifiers Lille, AEK Athens and Anderlecht. Expect AC to win the group comfortably, and the others to all take points from one another.

For those who like a bet, early odds quoted go: Barca 4/1 favourite, Chelsea 5/1, Real 9/1, AC Milan 10/1, Man Utd 11/1, Inter 13/1, Arsenal and Liverpool 18/1 and 20/1 plus on all the others. You can still get a free $30 bet at betfair.com by inputting the code 6CHE3VPWJ when required.

So who will land the pot of gold of the Champions League this year? Barca have added Thuram and Zambrotta from Italy, but they were surprisingly smacked 3-0 by their compatriots Sevilla in the Super Cup, the match between the Champions League and UEFA cup winners. Barca displayed a surprising weakness in the centre of their defence and John Terry and his pals at Stamford Bridge are certain to have noted that. Best of the outsiders is the fast improving Lyon.

Chelsea have added Ballack and the wonderful Shevchenko, and may be Ashley Cole too. As I have written elsewhere, I think Chelsea can do it this time. They would surely trade the Premier League title for the Champions League. But what do I know? I'm still working for a living. Make up your own mind. Good watching.
