Champions League History

The UEFA Champions League began life as the European Champion Clubs' Cup referred to as simply the European Cup and was originally conceived as a knockout competition between the champion club of each country. It's format has been considerably expanded since then and it now regarded as the premier club football competition in the world.

The tournament began in 1955 as a reaction to claims in the British press that Wolverhamptom Wanders were the 'Champions of the World' after a successful run of wins in friendlies against European competition in the early fifties. A formal competition began in the season 1955 -56 with teams playing two matches, home and away to progress to the the next knockout stage.

ChelseaFC

Real Madrid soon dispelled Wolves' claim, winning the trophy for the first five years on the trot and Real have since won it nine times in total, the current record. But English clubs did come to dominate the competition in the 1970s and early 1980s when Liverpool won it four times and Nottingham Forest twice.

A controversial five year ban for English clubs following the Heysel disaster in 1985 ended that dominance and it was not until Manchester United won the competition in 1999 for the second time that English clubs would again come out on top.

Overall, Italian clubs have the best record with 12 wins and 14 runners-up, Spain are next with 12 wins and 9 runners-up, whilst English clubs have 11 winners. Germany and Holland share six winners each.

Nowadays, the format of the tournament has greatly expanded such that the strongest European Leagues provide as many as four entrants.

There are several preliminary rounds prior to the round robin group stages with the top teams in each group progressing to a two leg knockout stage progressing to the showcase final. Italy's Internazional are the current UEFA Champions League holders having beaten Germany's Bayern Munich 2 - 0 in the 2010 final.

Champions League Preview: Chelsea Vs Marseille

For Chelsea, the Champions League Group F game against Marseille, on Tuesday, presents an opportunity to regain morale after two losses, last week.

The first was a mid-week defeat by Newcastle in the Carling Cup, the second, a Premier League capitulation to Manchester City. Carlos Tevez struck once for Manchester City, and let the defenders do the rest, to seal Chelsea's first defeat of the season.

Chelsea

The fact that the Champions League encounter is a home match at Stamford Bridge should be cause for comfort among Carlo Ancelotti's men.

Marseille manager Deschamps is no stranger to Stamford Bridge as he once had a brief stint at the helm of the London squad. The Frenchman also had a previous visit with Monaco, for a Champions League game, and Chelsea's loss in that match saw the Premier League champions crash out of the European tournament.

The last French team to visit Stamford Bridge was Bordeaux, on Laurent Blanc's watch. Chelsea was the winner on that occasion slamming in four goals while not conceding any. Marseille will not want to meet the same fate.

Marseille lost their opening match in Group F, a game in which they hosted Spartak Moscow. So the pressure will be on the French team to stave off defeat in the away game to Ancelotti's men.

Chelsea are certain to use the match as a redemption opportunity following their loss at the City of Manchester Stadium, on Saturday. But their cause is not likely to be helped by the absence of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

Lampard has been advised rest after a hernia operation; Drogba is serving a suspension. Lampard's absence in midfield was a key factor in Chelsea's first defeat of the Premiership season.

Apart from Lampard and Drogba, Benayoun and Salomon Kalou will also not be available in the Marseille game, owing to injury.

Chelsea have already recorded a win in Group F, seeing off MSK Zilina in an away match, earlier this month. That was a convincing 4-1 victory, and Ancelotti will be hoping for a similar showing by his squad against the French visitors.

Daniel Sturridge is likely to partner Anelka in place of Drogba, and this could be a great opportunity for Sturridge to showcase his skills. The teenager already has a Premier League goal this season.

The pressure will be on Marseille as a loss could see them crash out of the Champions League, while Chelsea are more or less certain of qualifying for the next stage.

Despite their overweaning European ambitions, Chelsea will have an eye on their Premier league fortunes, even as they use the Marseille game to hone their act, ahead of the Arsenal match on Sunday.

Watch Schalke vs Chelsea Live Online - UEFA Champions League Preview

Schalke might be trailing the other three teams in Group B, but they still have everything to play for as they welcome Chelsea to the Arena AufSchalke with a single point separating them from second position. For Chelsea, a victory would guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds if the result in the night's other group fixture goes their way.

With Chelsea rediscovering their winning form under new coach Avram Grant, the challenge for Schalke two weeks ago was already fraught with difficulties. Another blow came when Kevin Kuranyi was ruled out just before the start with a knee injury, and with only four minutes to go, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer committed a grave mistake that allowed Florent Malouda to score the opener.

Chelsea

Schalke second defeat in three games was confirmed when Didier Drogba blast a diving header into the net, though there were positives and Soren Larsen was unfortunate with a header that came back off an upright. Now Schalke must rediscover the form that enabled them to win away to Rosenborg BK on Matchday 2 as they look to improve on their previous two UEFA Champions League group campaigns in which they finished in fourth and third place.

There was a gap of 32 years before Schalke crossed swords with the English foes. It came in the first group stage of the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League when they beat Arsenal 3-1 at the Arena AufSchalke. It was the final group fixture and it could not prevent Schalke finishing in fourth place while the Gunners went into the contest knowing they had already qualified.
Chelsea approach this coming match knowing that a third successive group win would assure them of a place for the fifth successive season if Rosenborg secured a second victory away at Valencia.

Stuttgart were Chelsea's opponents in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when Gianfranco Zola's goal in Stockholm was enough to give Chelsea the trophy for a second time.

Champions League and Chances of Arsenal

Arsenal Football Club is one of the big football clubs of the world. It has achieved numerous glories in past and the current young side is a real threat to many teams.

Five years without a trophy is an oft quoted term when talking about Arsenal. This season Arsenal wants to deliver. This desire is expressed by the manager. There are many trophies on the line and currently Arsenal is in the position of winning all of them. They are not out of any competition nor are they chasing anyone in the league.

Chelsea FootballClub

Champions League, the toughest tournament according to many, is the only trophy not won by Arsenal. They started their Champions League campaign in grand style. In the first two games they score 09 goal. It was raining goal. They were very comfortably placed. Then came two defeats and the situation in the group changed. On the last day of group stage Arsenal had to win in order to qualify for the round of 16. They got the win they were looking for but they finished second in the group. It means that they have to play their round of 16 matches against the like of Barcelona, Real Madrid and other tough sides. What are the chances of Arsenal to make it to the Quarter Final?

If Arsenal are really unlucky and get Barcelona then the chances of winning Champions League are none to be honest, slim to be optimistic and not impossible to be Arsenal's manager. The way in which Barcelona has treated Real Madrid and the way in which they had already played at the Emirates it is not difficult to say that if on 17 December Arsenal and Barcelona are matched up then Arsenal fans will quietly accept their defeat even before the game.

In case of Real Madrid or other teams Arsenal has some chances to advance to the next round. It will be great test of Arsenal side, who thus far have shown that they are weak at the back and unable to finish the game. Apart from Barcelona, any other side and Arsenal will be ready to take on. It will be tough for Arsenal to advance to the Quarter Final stage but at least they will have some fighting chance.

According to the experts this season Arsenal should forget about Champions League. In fact they are suggesting it to all the teams as they see only Barcelona to win.

Chelsea Will Beat Barcelona - Champions League Semi Final 2009

The much awaited tussle between Chelsea and Barcelona football clubs is here and the first leg of the two leg semifinal will commence in the evening in Barcelona. It is deemed as the match up of the season with teams with different abilities trying to out do each other. In many ways it will be a contest between the fast paced physical approach of English premier league and technically superior one touch football of Barcelona.

The prediction is hard to make and even both coaches are staying away from making any sort of announcements before the match.

Chelsea FC

I guess I need to put my head on block and I'm going with Chelsea Football Club. I believe the Barcelona is about to catch a slap. They will be beaten over both legs.

Chelsea unlike Bayern Munich in the previous round have a much stable and permanent defense and it will be mighty hard for the Barcelona's forward to run them home and dry by beating the off side trap. Henry, Eto and Messi are good in La Liga this season but they haven't come across the physical approach of Chelsea. Bayern had three new defenders in last four and probably playing for the first time together at Nou Camp.

Secondly most of Barcelona creativity is focused on Xavi and Inniesta, and the duo will face a stiff challenge from Essien and Ballack, both physically demanding players especially upper body strength which the Barcelona players lack.

The dual of the match could be either Essien and Xavi or Malouda vs Dani Alves. It may seem strange but most of Messi industriousness depends upon Alves as it provides Messi to go in on his left foot. Malouda drives will not only keep Alves in his own half but his better adaptability to defensive work will also make it easy for Boswinga to defend against Messi. Henry and Eto are free running players and they won't get any space today so won't be a big surprise if one of them get substituted around 75 minutes.

Leave all the rest to Drogba has Barcelona don't have something called defense in football and with fast paced closing they will bound to make errors. Barcelona is not getting anything out of its home match.

Leave the rest for next week.

Great Liverpool FC Matches - Champions League Final 2005 V AC Milan

On a warm summer night in 2005, the red half of Merseyside were celebrating Liverpool's first European Cup Final for many years, hopes were sky high. They had brushed aside tough opposition to make it this far.

It didn't take Milan long to crush the red's hopes, Paulo Maldini scored in the first minute and Liverpool looked shell shocked. Milan dominated the first half and in the 39th minute Herman Crespo made it 2-0. Liverpool had left gaping holes in their defense and a minute before half time, Crespo made it 3-0. It seemed on Merseyside that all was lost.

In the second half Liverpool came out looking like a completely different team and between the 56th and 59th minutes of the game, Gerrard, Smicer and Alonso all scored for the reds, bringing the game level. The Liverpool fans in the crowd, so quiet at half time, were by now in full voice, contemplating a victory that had seemed impossible only minutes before.

Liverpool continued to press but at full time the game was all square. During extra time Milan began to dominate and were it not for an incredible double save from Polish goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, the Italian side would have won the game.

As it was, extra time finished with no more goals and so it was decided on penalties. Milan missed their first two while Liverpool were on target. Milan got one back while Liverpool missed one. Both teams scored the next so it was up to Shevchenko to even it up for Milan - Once again Dudek saved which sparked the wild celebrations on and off the pitch. It was the greatest Liverpool comeback of all time and the trophy belonged to Liverpool.

Inter Milan Wins UEFA Champions' League - Thumps Bayern Munich 2-0

Internazinale Milan of Italy this evening thumped Bayern Munich of Germany 2-0 to win this year's UEFA Champions' league at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, thereby ending their 45 years drought in the much lucrative and prestigious tournament.

This record has once again proven Coach Jose Maurinho to be 'The special one'. He went to Chelsea FC of England and ended their 50 years unsuccessful runs in the premiership; and now he has done it again for Inter Milan, making it treble this season having won the Scudetto earlier.

Today's match saw Bayern Munich playing against a very balanced, tactical and disciplined opposition. Bayern did the playing while Inter kept doing the scoring. At first half ball possession was 63%: 35% in favour of Bayern and at the end of the game it stood at 65%: 35% on the average, yet they lost the match to a more focused Inter Milan. The German boys wasted most of their chances, but it was Diego Milito who scored a brace to single-handedly hand the trophy to the Italians. His first goal came in the 35th minute courtesy of a pass he received from Wesley Sneijder. His second goal in the 70th minute sank the boat for the Munich players and finally ended their title ambition for this season.

Internazionale played as a team, doing more of mass defense and periodic counter offensive. Their defense was able to absorb all the pressure piled on them by the Germans. Arjen Robben was particularly outstanding on the Bayern side but most of his crosses were begging for someone to convert them. However, it was a night Diego Milito shone like a million stars as his superb finishing delivered the prestigious trophy into the laps of Inter. Inter Milan has by this feat silenced critics who thought their victories over championship favorites Chelsea and Barcelona were a fluke.

Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder at different times shot unto the body of Julio Caesar. Robben's shot was also parried by the goal keeper for a corner kick in the 65th minute. Julio Caesar and his defenders frustrated the Munich attack and made sure they kept a clean slate in the match. At the end of the match, one player was particularly overjoyed and that player is Samuel Eto'o who won the Champions' league back to back, after he had won the last edition with FC Barcelona. To get to this stage Inter Milan scored 15 goals and conceded 9.

Frank Ribery was conspicuously missing on the Munich side due to suspension; perhaps his presence would have made the difference for his side. This time around their goals' talisman Ivica Olic failed to shine. The Milan side made history as Samuel Eto'o became the only player to have won the league back to back in recent time. Javier Zanetti made his 700th appearance for Inter.

Arsenal Meets Barcelona Live in UEFA Champions League

There will be an atmosphere of anticipation at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal meets Barcelona in one of the biggest UEFA Champions League matchups in years. Once the draw revealed the matchup, the excitement from both sets of fans has been steadily increasing. This is hardly surprising considering the way both teams play football which has often been pointed out by fans to be the personification of perfection in the sport.

The stable of stars that adorn Barcelona and Arsenal's lineups are also the stuff of fantasy football. Barcelona boast perhaps the best player on the planet currently in the form of Lionel Messi, the Argentine who has scored countless beautiful goals and made many more. The Swedish enigma Zlatan Ibrahimovic partners him in attack and is capable of moments of magic that belies his physical stature. The Catalan club's midfield is dictated by the synchronous symphonic play from the Spanish duo of Iniesta and Xavi who form the perfect axis. Barcelona's defence might be their weakest area but Gerard Pique and Carlos Puyol man the fortress well enough on most occasions.

The Gunners from North London do not pale in comparison. Leading the line would usually be Robin Van Persie but the injured Dutchman's place will go to the equally capable Daniel Bendtner. Working in tandem with him will be the marvelous Andrei Arshavin and Theo Walcott who both ally pace with inventive genius. Pulling the strings in midfield is the much sought after Cesc Fabregas who would be eager to face his former club. Arsenal are also suspect at the back although Sol Campbell will be enjoying his indian summer with the club he rejoined in the transfer window.

Some of these players might be missing from the first leg in England due to injuries. Barcelona will miss the services of Iniesta who has to sit out due to a hamstring strain. His place would surely go to Thierry Henry who will make an emotional return to the club where he spent 8 years of his career at Arsenal.

Arsenal have received the biggest blow to their Champions League hopes with news that playmaker Fabregas would most likely have to miss the first leg. A knee injury suffered in the club's latest match has landed him on the treatment table. Last minute medical treatment could yet see him line up against Barcelona and Fabregas would be keen to pit his talents against the club that many expect him to return to in the near future.

The 2006 Champions League final was the most recent time when the Gunners had to play Barcelona. Spanish flair came out on top on the night as Henry experienced the biggest disappointment of his career with Arsenal. It was not long after that the Frenchman departed for Barcelona as once again, football's ability in perfectly timed dramatic irony was once again illustrated.

The expectations and excitement surrounding the Arsenal vs Barcelona live stream could end in disappointment if both teams suffer an attack of nerves. There is a lot riding on each game as the Champions League approaches its conclusion. The knockout format is well and truly underway and no second chances will be available for each team. This could lead to players adopting a safety-first approach that could resemble shadowboxing, instead of going at each other's throats in search of the knockout punch.

Watch Arsenal vs Liverpool Online Live - Watch Champions League Preview 2008

Arsenal will be facing Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the upcoming Champions League 2008. This will certainly be an exciting match and both managers will be deciding what strategies to use so as to chase both the English Premier League as well as the Champions League titles. The interesting thing is that Liverpool and Arsenal will play each other three times in succession at the start of April, with the quarter-final matches straddling a Premier League encounter at Highbury on April 5.

Arsenal and Liverpool have never before faced each other in European competition, but the platform has been set for a familiar all-England semi-final. Should Liverpool and Chelsea make it through to the last four, they will face each other at that stage of the tournament for the third time in four years, with Rafael Benitez's side having won the past two meetings.

All eyes will be on Arsenal and Liverpool. I think this draw favors Arsenal more because both games will be played in England; therefore Benitez's Champions League experience and knowledge won't matter as much as it would have against a European side. If Arsenal can bottle up Torres, Liverpool will definitely be out.

Although Arsenal may be above Liverpool in the Premier League standings but domestic form has counted for nothing in recent all-English duels. When Chelsea beat Arsenal in 2004 and Liverpool bettered Chelsea in 2005 and 2007, it was the losing side that finished higher in the Premier League.

Benítez got the better of Arsenal in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League second group stage when in charge of Valencia. The teams drew 0-0 at Highbury in December 2002 and met again in their final group match at Mestalla in March 2003, when a 2-1 Valencia victory secured first place in the section for the Spanish side and relegated Arsenal to third.

Liverpool and Arsenal last met in a two-leg tie in the English League Cup semi-final in February 1978. Liverpool won the first leg at Anfield 2-1 and held out for a goalless draw in north London in the return.

Manchester United to Play AC Milan in Champions League

The draw for the next round of Champions league is out now. The top two English clubs Manchester United and Chelsea will play against the two Italian Clubs, AC Milan and Inter Milan. Arsenal will play against FC Porto.

Manchester United was thrashed out from Champions League in the 2006-07 season by AC Milan. It was the last time when Man United did not qualified for the final game. After that United have played the final in both seasons 2007-08 and 2008-09. This season's performance of Manchester United is not very eye catching like in the last few seasons. They are still struggling to fill in the place of Ronaldo. In January transfer window Sir Alex Ferguson will have to bring some good players to improve his side.

Chelsea will play against Inter Milan, which is currently coached by José Mourinho. Mourinho is the man who coached Chelsea to win two consecutive EPL trophies in seasons 2004-05 and 2005-06. Mourinho unexpectedly left Chelsea in 2007-08 season just before the game against Manchester United which Chelsea lost 2-0. So clearly he left Chelsea with some real bad memories although he became one of the greatest mangers for Chelsea football club. Now he is all set to take on Chelsea with his Inter Milan side. So it is better to say it will be Mourinho vs Chelsea.

Arsenal will be playing against FC Porto. FC Porto has won the Champions League Trophy in 2003-04 with José Mourinho coaching the Portuguese club.

Fixtures are following:

- Olympique Lyonnais vs Real Madrid CF 16/02/10 and 10/03/10
- AC Milan vs Manchester United FC 16/02 and 10/03
- FC Porto vs Arsenal FC 17/02/10 and 09/03/10
- FC Bayern München vs ACF Fiorentina 17/02/10 and 09/03/10
- VfB Stuttgart vs FC Barcelona 23/02/10 and 17/03/10
- Olympiacos FC vs FC Girondins de Bordeaux 23/02/10 and 17/03/10
- FC Internazionale Milano vs Chelsea FC 24/02/10 and 16/03/10
- PFC CSKA Moskva vs Sevilla FC 24/02/10 and 16/03/10

The English Premier League Starts Here, But Who Will Be the New Champions?

The English Premier League gets under way this week, and though it doesn't seem five minutes since Chelsea were lifting the trophy for the second season in a row, here we go again.

Chelsea start as clear favourites, 1/2 say the bookies, and that does not represent good value. There may be better value to be had in the next few weeks. True, Chelsea have improved their squad by recruiting Shevchenko from AC Milan and Ballack from Bayern Munich, though the unfortunate Ballack was promptly injured in the traditional warm up match, the Community Shield. It doesn't appear a serious injury though, and Ballack should be back soon. But Chelsea have also puzzlingly let Duff go to Newcastle for a pittance of a fee, and there are problems with one or two other players. It may be that Chelsea concentrate their main fire this season on the Champions League, and if they do that, there are three, possibly four challengers, who will be eager to jump in and snatch the title.

Incidentally Chelsea lost that Community Shield match to Liverpool 2-1 with a late goal from the beanpole giant Peter Crouch, and Liverpool look well equipped to challenge the blues this season. They have not won the title since 1990, and amazingly have never won the Premier League. Their supporters are hungry for the league title, and this year urged on by inspirational captain Steven Gerrard, they could go close. They have strengthened again by acquiring the lightning fast Bellamy from Blackburn Rovers, though he is injury prone, and accident-prone too. Liverpool will go close. Current price 8/1.

Second last year were Manchester United, and I have a feeling if you offered them a top two place right now, they might take it. They have lost their talisman goal scorer Ruud to Real Madrid and they will certainly miss his thirty goals a season. But oddly now he has gone, the other players know they must step up and start scoring right through the team. They do have goalscorers in the side and Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, has cash in his pocket to spend, though he seems to be finding it difficult locating the right players. They will be desperate to stay ahead of their nearest and bitterest rivals Liverpool, and will do well to do so. Lots will depend on Rooney and Ronaldo, keeping their tempers and concentration. You write off Manchester United at your peril. 8/1 for the league.

Fourth last year, albeit by only two points from their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur, were Arsenal. It is all change for them as they go into their spanking brand new home at the Emirates Stadium. They have also lost three stalwarts in Pires, Bergkamp, and Campbell, and are on the brink of losing England's full back Ashley Cole too, to Chelsea. The blues have reportedly bid £20 million, Arsenal want £30 million. They do have good young players coming through, and a much larger crowd this season judging by early ticket sales and greater ground capacity. Don't forget they did make the Champions League final last season. Add to that Thierry Henry's renewed commitment to the club, and it would be foolish to write off their chances. But the competition will be hotter than ever for the Gunners, not least from their near neighbours, Spurs. Arsenal are also 8/1 for the title, but might do well to finish in the top four.

That brings us to England's most improved club, Spurs. They have been getting stronger for several seasons now, and under their likeable manager Martin Jol, they should be stronger again this year. They have concentrated on buying the best young players they can find, and being patient with them as they grow into the team. They have consistently bought young English players too, something that Arsenal have noticeably not done, though selling Michael Carrick to Manchester United is a blow, (Arsenal are now regularly putting out an eleven containing not a single British player) and one senses that the spirit in the Spurs' camp continues to rise. But can they break into the top four this year? They could do so, and if any of the top four slip up, or have a bad year, then expect the whites to step up and take their place. Spurs are currently 80/1 to win the league and even that may not be too fanciful.

So what of the rest? The black and white shirted hordes will still turn out at Saint James's Park to support Newcastle, and in Damien Duff for £5 million they must surely have landed the buy of the season. The new captain Scottie Parker will drive them on, but the loss of England's centre forward Michael Owen through injury during the World Cup, he may miss the whole season, is a big blow. Newcastle are improving, but still need more firepower to compete with the elite.

Aston Villa have been a sleeping giant for years, but with the long drawn out takeover finally getting sorted, and the charismatic manager, (Saint) Martin O'Neill duly installed, Villa will improve. But they need to. They were almost relegated last year, and they have so far added no new players to the squad. But there is a sense of optimism around Villa Park, and the supporters will undoubtedly flock back, to begin with at least. Don't forget Villa are former European champions, but then again so are Nottingham Forest (twice) and they are now languishing in the third division. Villa alone flies the flag for the English midlands and they will need to improve to stay up, and under Martin, they will.

Everton are Liverpool's second club, though their supporters still consider they are the best. They have bought well in the close season landing Andy Johnson from Crystal Palace, (albeit for a lot of money at £8.5 million) but alongside Beattie, they look to have the firepower to trouble the best defences. Everton are very much an up and down side. I expect them to be up this year.

West Ham are currently London's fourth club, and they will be looking to improve on that. They reached the cup final last year and were unlucky to lose and in Dean Ashton, they have a striker who knows where the goals are. I thought he should have gone to the World Cup, and I am pleased to see him included in the current England squad. I suspect the manager Alan Pardew has bought well, and West Ham will be a handful for anyone, especially at their tight home stadium of Upton Park.

Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers, both from Lancashire, and both I suspect will do well to repeat last year's successes. Blackburn have lost Bellamy to Liverpool, a big blow, and the players they have bought in are not in the same class. Bolton have been quiet in the transfer market and one detects a little frustration from their larger than life manager, Sam Allardyce. He missed the England job to Steve McClaren by a whisker, and it shows.

McClaren's replacement at Middlesbrough is the ex England centre half and Boro player, Gareth Southgate. They will need to hit the ground running. He has lost Jimmy Floyd to Charlton, though he has acquired the cultured left footed Arca from relegated Sunderland. I expect the umpteen English kids to step up this year and Middlesbrough should do OK.

Charlton and Fulham are London's fifth and sixth Premier League Clubs. Charlton have lost their long time manager, Alan Curbishley, and they will miss him. They have recruited Ian Dowie, and Dowie took Crystal Palace down. Addicks' fans will be hoping he does not repeat the performance, and they really should not be relegated. They have recruited Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink from Boro for his goals, and in Darren Bent, they have a centre forward eager and willing to show that his omission from the England World Cup squad was a catastrophic mistake, which it was. They should score goals, and that will be good enough to keep them safe.

I expect Fulham to be relegated every year, and every year they escape. That is a huge credit to their manager, the likeable Welshman, Chris Coleman. They have recruited Jimmy Bullard from Wigan, though there still seems some unrest in the camp with Malbranque and one or two others. Fulham will do well to stay up, but when it comes to it, they always seem to, and they probably will again.

Wigan Athletic confounded everyone with their performances last time. But as manager Paul Jewell has found before (at Bradford City), it is the second season where teams are often found out. But Wigan are no Bradford. They have a determined chairman who puts his money into the club, a former pro himself who broke his leg in the 1960 Cup Final, and they have acquired the former England centre forward in Emile Heskey, from relegated Birmingham City. But Emile has never been a prolific goal scorer. Wigan surely cannot match last year's achievements, and they could struggle, but I would be surprised if they were relegated.

Manchester City have made numerous personnel changes through the close season, though I am not convinced they are all for the better. The sale of their goalkeeper David James to Portsmouth is certainly a puzzling move. But their boisterous manager Stuart Pearce will keep everyone on their toes. I suspect this will be an important year for City, and for Pearce. A bad start could spiral out of control. A good start could see City pushing for a European place. If I had to choose, it would be the former.

Portsmouth survived by the skin of their teeth last year thanks solely to their returning talisman manager Harry Redknapp. Can they do it again? Yes, I think they can, urged on by their fanatical fans in their crumbling old stadium. Harry has had money to spend, and has spent it wisely. Portsmouth will be a handful at home, as they always are, and that should be good enough. I hope it isn't a hard year for Pompey, I don't think their nervous manager could stand it.

That leaves the three promoted clubs, Reading, Sheffield United and Watford. It is unusual for the three promoted teams to go straight back down, yet that is what the pundits are predicting. Reading, the Royals, won the Championship last season in a canter, and in their manager Steve Coppell, they have a thinking man's manager. I have followed his career closely ever since his league debut for Tranmere Rovers in the early seventies, a match I witnessed. They haven't added greatly to their squad, and it is uncertain how much cash he has at his disposal. Reading have never played in the top tier before, and the fans can't wait. A bad start could mean a long and painful season. A good start could be enough to see them safe. It's a fifty-fifty call.

Sheffield United, the Blades are back, and under the abrasive manager Neil Warnock for his first time in the EPL. No one will relish the trip to Brammall Lane, Yorkshire, not least the match officials who will surely hear the wrath of Neil's considerable tongue. United have shown in recent seasons that they can compete with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in FA Cup matches, but whether they can do that week in week out is an entirely different matter. You look at their squad of battlers, and you don't see quality, and ultimately, that could cost them.

Watford are an amazing story. They scrambled up through the play-offs defeating the much fancied Leeds United, and in their interesting young manager Adie Boothroyd, they have someone who demands listening to. He certainly talks a good season ahead for the Hornets, but can they really stay up? The bookmakers and the pundits say a definite no, but it has happened before. This situation reminds me of Jewell at Bradford City a few years ago, when everyone said they didn't have a cat in hells chance. But Jewell kept Bradford City up, and Boothroyd could do the same. If he did, much bigger clubs might come calling. Boothroyd seems destined to succeed, but whether it is at Watford, only time will tell. As for my choices: I will take Liverpool to break their duck, and win the Premier League. Chelsea might take the Champions League, and sorry, but Sheffield United, Fulham and Watford could be relegated. But what do I know? Don't follow my thoughts. Pick your own!

Let's hope it's a great season, with close finishes at either end of the table, which for once, it could be.

Champions League Draw - Chelsea Draw Barcelona For the Third Season Running

For the third season in succession Chelsea found themselves pitched against the current European champions, Barcelona in group A. Werder Bremen and Levski Sofia make up the quartet and it would be a huge surprise if either of those teams progressed.

In group B Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Sporting Lisbon and Spartak Moscow will do battle. Bayern have been weakened by the loss of Ballack to Chelsea, but should still be good enough to get through. Inter Milan have strengthened at the expense of their scandal hit rivals in Italy and will be hard to beat.

Group C sees Liverpool, winners in 2005, returning to the scene of their Istanbul triumph to play Galatasaray. Turkish football seems to have gone off the boil and Gala might struggle against both PSV Eindhoven and Bordeaux.

Group D pitches Valencia, Roma, Olympiakos and the dangerous Shaktar Donetsk, and the first two should make the last sixteen.

Group E sees the most successful European team ever, Real Madrid against Lyon, Steau Bucharest and Dynamo Kiev. Real begin the campaign under the returning Fabio Capello and they should improve on last season's dismal performance. Lyon under Gerard Houllier are still improving and should qualify.

Group F coughs up an Anglo-Scottish clash. Manchester United sent a reserve team up to Glasgow just before the season started and duly thumped the Scottish champions 3-0. Not many give Celtic much chance against United's first XI who have started the season on fire. Benfica look dangerous again. They knocked both United and Liverpool out last term and will need to be respected. FC Copenhagen makes up the quartet and may surprise a few people.

Group G features Arsenal, last year's beaten finalists, and they take on Porto, CSKA Moscow and Hamburg, not an easy group on paper for any of them and Arsenal will have to improve on early poor results at their brand new stadium. But expect them to qualify. No London team has ever won the European Cup/Champions League and Arsenal are desperate to beat their rivals Chelsea and Spurs (they're in the UEFA cup this time) to that particular honour. But Arsenal have lost several notable players such as Pires, Campbell and Bergkamp and though they have young rapidly improving players like Van Persie and Walcott, it is hard to envisage them picking up the trophy this time round.

Group H sees the banned, but reinstated AC Milan host surprise qualifiers Lille, AEK Athens and Anderlecht. Expect AC to win the group comfortably, and the others to all take points from one another.

For those who like a bet, early odds quoted go: Barca 4/1 favourite, Chelsea 5/1, Real 9/1, AC Milan 10/1, Man Utd 11/1, Inter 13/1, Arsenal and Liverpool 18/1 and 20/1 plus on all the others. You can still get a free $30 bet at betfair.com by inputting the code 6CHE3VPWJ when required.

So who will land the pot of gold of the Champions League this year? Barca have added Thuram and Zambrotta from Italy, but they were surprisingly smacked 3-0 by their compatriots Sevilla in the Super Cup, the match between the Champions League and UEFA cup winners. Barca displayed a surprising weakness in the centre of their defence and John Terry and his pals at Stamford Bridge are certain to have noted that. Best of the outsiders is the fast improving Lyon.

Chelsea have added Ballack and the wonderful Shevchenko, and may be Ashley Cole too. As I have written elsewhere, I think Chelsea can do it this time. They would surely trade the Premier League title for the Champions League. But what do I know? I'm still working for a living. Make up your own mind. Good watching.
