Transfer Rumours in January 2011 Predicted to Make Headline News

The forthcoming January 2011 Premier League football transfers are expected to make news with clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea looking for big name signings in order to compete with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Champions League and of course to get their hands on the Premier League title.

Transfer rumours get football fans talking like nothing else with gossip, speculation and in lots of cases, total nonsense. Premier League managers keep their cards tight to their chest regarding players they are looking to snap up in the transfer window and this January will be no different. Here we look at why transfer signings are such big news in the English Premier League.

Chelsea FC

Players like Weisley Schneider, Fernando Torres and Karim Benzema are bound to be on the list of players these managers would love to sign for their club in January. There's always negotiations taking place behind the scenes involving players clubs and agents. These talks are usually tentative approaches which are strictly off the record but many of these discussions are leeked and make the news. Take for example the recent Wayne Rooney saga at Manchester United. The news that he wanted to leave the club made headline news in most newspapers and then all the transfer talk surrounding which team was going to sign him. This example just shows how big Premier League football transfers are by making headline news.

Signing a new player is just as important to the supporters as they want players that will improve their team and new signings can mean the difference between winning and losing. Apart from actual football results, it's the one of the main things that fans look out for when checking the football section in newspapers or websites.

The fans tend to spread transfer news by word of mouth from one to another. Social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter fire the flames by spreading transfer rumours very quickly and to many people, especially if the rumour involves a well known player which can capture the imagination of the fans. If a famous player is seen talking to a club, people immediately come to the conclusion that a transfer is on the cards. A football transfer can give everyone connected with the football club a huge boost along with improving the quality of the team.

There are some websites that deliver the latest transfer news, from newspaper/magazine type websites to individual blogs. These websites contain all sorts of rumours from the sublime to the ridiculous. Many of these transfer rumours are gossip although the mere fact that these websites are so popular demonstrates how seriously fans take this subject.

EPL Season 2007-08 - Your Player Transfer Guide

Shirley Bassey's song Big Spender could not come truer for the 20-club English Premiership League. With the new season starting on 11 August 2007, the transfer outlay for the 20 top soccer clubs in England has already exceeded the £300m spent last season - then already setting a dubious expenditure record. In fact, soccer pundits expect their total outlay is to surpass the magical £500m mark by the time the transfer window shuts on 31 August 2007, which is more than enough to feed millions of homeless people around the world. Indeed, the EPL is by far the world's most successfully and obscenely expensive soccer league.

Get this: with the latest television deal signed and sealed, the worldwide TV rights almost doubled to £625m, including highlights, radio, Internet and mobile-phone contracts, total amount expected to be poured into the game is well over £2.7b for the next three years. As consumers, we are indirectly funding this amount of money by paying more to watch live TV action.

Strange enough, baring an exception 1995 whereby the title was won on the last day by Blackburn Rovers, the crown has been worn by only three clubs, with Manchester United dominating follow by Arsenal and Chelsea. We find it difficult to believe that the title will escape from the clutches of any of these three clubs in the coming new season. But who knows? Perhaps Liverpool, the most successful English club in history with their massive outlay this season, will win their first ever EPL title.

In the latest transfer market, Manchester United has fired the first salvo by spending over £50m to procure new players so far. Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspurs are playing catch-up after spending over £30m each, with surprising Portsmouth, West Ham and Fulham over £20m each, and Arsenal, Sunderland, Birmingham and Chelsea a little over £10m each. With the league being so lucrative, it is easy to understand why even modest clubs are splurging to maximum their chances of staying up for as many seasons as possible. This is evidenced by the transfer dealings of new Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez, who sanctioned more than £20m worth of deals, well surpassing the measly £1m spent four years ago. And this makes Fulham the biggest spender in West London, surpassing the mighty Chelsea.

For people like me without deep pockets, I am contented with spending a few dollars on a wager that Shirley Bassey's Big Spender will top the bill board charts once again this coming season. Don't bet against it. Cheers.

Who Should Liverpool FC Buy in the January Transfer Window?

Note that this article is about who we can realistically buy, not who I want us to buy in fantasy land. Liverpool Football Club have been strongly linked with Turkish whiz-kid Arda Turan recently, and I see this as an ideal move. Reportedly Arda (Turkish players are commonly known by their first name rather than their surname) would be available for around £10m, and we could easily raise that amount of cash with the sale of Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel and Andrea Dossena. The Turk often plays on the right wing but has been known to play in central midfield before, making him a highly versatile player (the kind that Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez likes).

The second player that could really benefit our team is veteran Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistlerooy, who, at his peak was one of the top marksmen in the world, but sadly now can't get a game for Real Madrid (his current club) due to their heavy squad redevelopment in the summer (where they spent over £200m on new players).

Another player that could be quite handy is Simon Kjaer. The Danish defender is one of Europe's hottest defensive talents, and the 20 year old who currently plays at Palermo would be a great addition to our squad and would certainly help to sure up our uncharacteristically leaky defence. Despite this, I think buying Kjaer might be a step too far for us, as we probably don't have the funds and our money would be better spent on quality attacking players.

Will Chelsea Sign Anyone in the Transfer Window?

With the January transfer window now open, the big question on everyone's lips remains the same. Will Chelsea FC sign any players during the window? Their team is nowhere near full strength at the moment, and with an aging squad the problem may only get worse. In my opinion, they need to sign a couple of players at least. Due to their transfer embargo they won't be able to sign any players until 2011 otherwise.

Their best players are out of action right now. Drogba (their best striker), Kalou, Mikel John Obi and Essien (their best defensive midfielder) are all at the African Cup of Nations for the entire month of January, and Nicholas Anelka (their second best striker) is out with an injury he recently picked up whilst training. Many fans have been left bewildered by Chelsea Manager Carlo Ancelotti's comments that he would 'streak on the pitch' if he signed any players during this transfer window.

That being said, they are top of the English Premier League, so maybe Carlo Ancelotti (who is, lest we forget a proven winner wherever he's been) knows exactly what he's doing. In the F.A. Cup against Watford FC he played the young striker Daniel Sturridge up front and he repaid the manager's faith in him by scoring two goals in a 5-0 win.

News has leaked out recently that Chelsea are looking to buy Italian striker Giampaolo Pazzini from surprise Italian package Sampdoria. The deal would reportedly be for around £22 million pounds, although a potential stumbling block could be that Sampdoria would want Pazzini loaned back to them for the rest of the season.

How Canon is Changing Photography With New Wireless Transfer Units

Canon recently announced that they are releasing three new wireless file transmitters (WFT) that will give professional photographers added ability to streamline their workflow process by helping to upload and share their work around the world within seconds of snapping a photo. These new wireless transfer units make it easy for photographers to connect to Wi-Fi or LAN networks with a simple touch of a button. Photographers are ecstatic with this new leap in technology that will allow photographers the world over to speed up the process of downloading their photos, transferring files, and so much more. The first three new WTF models are set to accompany the top three professional digital SLR camera models that Canon offers: The WFF-E2 II A for the 1D Mark IV, the WFT-E4 IIA for the 5D Mark II, and the WFT-EF A for the 7D.

All of these first WFT models gives photographers the unique ability to fire 10 different cameras at the same time with the included Camera Linking feature. While most professionals do not have 10 of these high end DSLRs sitting around, many of them have two, and the possibilities with just two are amazing. Think about it: A wedding kiss lasts just a few short seconds, and a single photographer can't possibly attain multiple angles, distances, or even apertures in that tiny span of time. However, with the WFT Camera Linking feature they can easily set up two cameras in completely different areas and capture unique shots as never possible before - at least when shooting alone.

These units also integrate with Bluetooth GPS or hard wired GPS devices to allow photojournalists or even wildlife photographers to geotag their images. Event photographers will be able to instantly send their shots to storage or print, or even have a live feed of their images up on a projection screen at the event. The possibilities are endless!

"The high-tech world of digital photography has presented professional photographers with new methods for image capture and delivery, streamlining workflows and providing digital delivery from across a room, or across the world. The level of connection and control offered by our new WFT units along with their enhanced ease-of-use will change the methods and speed by which professionals deliver images and conduct business," said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A.

Just some of the features of these new wireless file transmitters are:

Compatibility with 802.11a/b/g wireless networks so you're sure to be able to connect to whichever wireless network is available. The Wi-Fi Protected Setup technology included on these units allows photographers who don't have a strong networking knowledge to work with them easily. FTP mode and Server Mode allows photographers to browse a connected camera as they would a computer hard drive, to download or upload files fast. It supports up to three browsing users at a time. EOS Utility mode gives full remote shooting control with live view, meaning a photographer can set up the camera, view, and shoot what they see all remotely from a computer. As mentioned above, the camera linking function allows up to 10 compatible cameras to be fired off at the same time, even when positioned far apart. As you can see, these new WFT units are changing the way photographers work, and we're excited to see how far this technology will take us.

The Transfer Window in English Football

Many football leagues in Europe used to have a transfer window of some description. During the season of 2002-03, the football governing body FIFA made the transfer window compulsory. This was done in an attempt to stop clubs buying success. The finer points such as regulations and exceptions are left to the individual governing body.

There is much debate about the merits of having a transfer window in English football. Many people within the game are firmly opposed to a window because it restricts their ability to buy and sell players when the need arises. Supporters do not like this rule either as the option of improving their team by signing players is lost for a large part of the season.

When the transfer window is closed the options for a club can be severely limited. If players are lost through injury clubs no longer have the option of bringing new ones in. The only solution in these cases is to sign players on loan deals. These are temporary arrangements where the club borrows a player from another club. These deals are usually on a monthly basis although longer deals are also used. A club can also use the emergency loan system if their quota has been exhausted.

For many years English football had a transfer deadline. This was known as transfer deadline day and saw a frenzy of activity as many clubs attempted to sign players. Deals would often be completed with only seconds to spare. This was usually around March with only a few games remaining. No players could be bought or sold after this point although clubs could use emergency loans in some cases.

This was considered a much better kind of transfer deadline and the majority of people within English football would like to see a return to this system. Whether or not this will happen is unclear as FIFA will have the final say in these matters. Critics of the transfer window say it encourages panic buying.

Because it is so unpopular, there are doubts about whether the transfer window in English football and elsewhere will stay in place. At the very least, many football people would like to see this rule relaxed. This would be less restrictive compared to the transfer window in its current form.
